DESCRIPTION


The Napa Foundation for Options in Education is seeking a dynamic and passionate Music Teacher (Certificated) for our new charter school, Mayacamas Countywide Middle School, which opened Fall 2024. The teacher reports to the Head of School and is responsible for the implementation of our music curriculum and music courses they instruct. The teacher fosters a collaborative and stimulating classroom environment for a diverse group of students, as well as fosters a strong collaboration between parents, faculty members, board members and community partners.


Because MCMS will be in its second year, we are not just looking for teachers, but for founding educators.  We need people who want to work, and can thrive, in a fast-paced, evolving setting, and who demonstrate flexibility, creativity and persistence. MCMS needs educators who want to play a significant role in evolving our model and curriculum, facilitating meetings, designing school systems, and helping to create a school culture that is focused on social-emotional health, high achievement and community. We are searching for educators committed to the love of teaching and building a long-term legacy for Napa families.


PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Foster a safe and nurturing learning environment in accordance with school policies and procedures focused on students’ social-emotional needs and development of positive character traits.

  • Organize classroom systems/procedures and manage student behavior to ensure that all students are fully engaged in learning with consistent practices across the school.

  • Establish an environment where students are excited about learning through engaging, dynamic learning activities such as project- and problem-based learning.

  • Develop lesson plans according to identified frameworks for instructional design, collaboratively planning with fellow teachers to ensure interdisciplinary project-based learning across the curriculum.

  • Build strong relationships with students and parents, engaging in student-led conferences, trimester report cards, online access to real-time data about student performance and progress and home-school communications as needed.

  • Be willing to be a flexible and positive contributor in a school where collaborative decision-making is practiced in developing project and problem-based activities.

  • Have had positive relationships with students and colleagues.

  • Communication skills that include the ability to employ active listening with depth of understanding and to share authentically for healthy relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.

  • An openness and willingness to learn new strategies and mindsets to support the school’s students.

  • Identify students’ areas for improvement and short- and long-term learning and behavioral goals in their ILPs and be able to work with students, families, and internal resources to suggest options for improvement.

  • Provide continual assessment of student progress and engage in collaborative data review on a weekly basis with peer teachers, Counselor, EL Coordinator and other staff.

  • Maintain student records, and complete assigned paperwork in provided timeframes.

  • Collaborate with Special Education Teacher(s), Counselor, SpEd therapists and consultants, and EL Coordinator (starting Y3, or earlier depending on funding) to meet the needs of all students.

  • Attend and implement Professional Development (PD) training throughout and beyond the school year, including two weeks of summer PD and weekly PD and collaboratively planning time with peer teachers, and to understand the school’s mission, philosophy, and goals.

  • Demonstrate support and knowledge of the school's goals and mission.

  • Attend and participate in school-based meetings and activities.

  • Additional duties as may be assigned by the Head of School.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Qualifications - Teacher:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Master’s degree in subject matter field or Education (preferred).

  • Must possess, or be in the process of completing, a current California single subject teaching credential, or CTE credential; CLAD or BCLAD strongly preferred

  • Ability to teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics: 

  • Strong knowledge of subject matter, including musical composition and performance experience.

  • Knowledge of musical history, composers, theory, reading musical notation and music skills and mechanics (in both Instrumental and vocal mediums).

  • Ability to teach sequential instrument method courses for beginner and intermediate/advanced instrumental music students, in particular using non-traditional instruments for modern music-style classes. 

  • Ability to teach beginning to advanced music theory (rhythms, note names, expressions), music history, performance techniques, and cultural diversity through music.

  • Ability and interest in teaching students alternative musical curricula including creative expression, songwriting, and basic recording.

  • Ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative student data.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).

  • Must be computer literate.
